Over to Velocker Inventor Brian Hoffman:
“I have always fancied myself as an environmental activist. I go to climate rallies, donate to causes, and generally live responsibly. Over the summer of 2017, I was doing some reading about climate change and the looming environmental crisis and something clicked. I realized that I needed to cut my carbon footprint as quickly as possible and contribute to the solution, rather than being part of the problem.
The first change that I made was to drive less, a lot less. Thankfully electric bikes were fresh on the scene and readily available. I did the required reading and decided that a longtail cargo bike with electric assist would be the best fit for my needs. I quickly located and purchased a cargo e-bike at my local bike shop and while it was expensive, it was the best investment I have ever made.
I was immediately bicycle commuting every day, doing everything I did before, but by bike! My SUV sat for weeks at a time. I was living without gas, saving money, feeling happier and in decidedly better health. The primary issue that I faced with e-bike commuting was the inability to carry and lock up my belongings, specifically heavy, expensive tools.
After an exhaustive search, I purchased an expensive set of “heavy duty” pannier bags. While probably sufficient for groceries and smaller, lighter items, I managed to destroy the bags in a few weeks. Maybe my expectations were unrealistic, but this gave me an idea.

During the winter I designed and built my first set of aluminum panniers. The boxes had locking yet removable lids. I could now securely carry my tools, and I could also carry my dogs and even a passenger! The cargo system mounted securely to the bike and was easily detachable without tools, for maintenance or tire changes. The boxes were large (42 liters/11 gallons), but light (8 pounds), and they were hardly noticeable when riding.
The panniers immediately got a lot of attention, so we affixed decals on the sides to market our businesses! This was truly sustainable transportation, and I felt obligated to share it!

Over the next 10 months I assembled the Ebike Cargo Team. We built many prototypes of cargo boxes, and we even gave them a name, Velockers!
We decided on producing 2 sizes, the Max for longtail cargo bikes and the Sport for standard bicycles. We thoughtfully designed every detail and feature of the Velocker cargo system to be useful, safe and cost effective. In addition to the lockable cargo box capacity, Velockers also provide a large flat deck and tie down points to strap larger items to. Our proprietary mounting system is heavy duty, secure and easy to install.
The bicycle industry’s reception to Velocker has been overwhelming. For Eurobike 2019 we collaborated with the e-bike innovators at Benno Bikes to create the “Camping Bike,” an off-road adventure-camping ebike. It was one of the most photographed displays at Eurobike.
Velockers are compatible with most rear bicycle racks and if you do not have a rack, we can suggest or provide one. We are working with several major bicycle manufacturers to bring you the best possible cargo solutions.
