A London lorry driver who carelessly killed 29-year-old cyclist Louise Wright in London has been convicted of causing her death by careless driving – but has walked away with a suspended sentence and assorted wrist slaps. Should he have gone to prison? The family doesn’t think so …
Cars are Important – Little Kids, Not so Much
Here are photos and video of a situation that endangered small children. It was caused by a truck driver who was only thinking about the most important rule of the road – cars CANNOT be blocked. Compared to that central tenet of modern life, children are almost literally invisible. Cars are IMPORTANT – little kids, not so much.
Give us safe bike routes so that EVERYONE can cycle
We need safe bike routes in every city, so that many more seniors can cycle in safety. All the money spent on cycling infrastructure would be more than made up by the money saved in the healthcare system if more seniors could safely exercise every day.
Stanley Park Seawall Bike Trail, Vancouver – Guide plus Video
This is a complete guide plus narrated video about the flat, family-friendly Stanley Park Seawall Bike Trail – one of the most beautiful bike trails in the world. Vancouver’s Stanley Park was recently named the top urban park in the world by Trip Advisor. It’s the third-biggest park in North America, comprising 400 hectares of rain forest, right in the heart of Vancouver. Flanked by English Bay and Burrard Inlet, the entire park offers magical water views, and shade from towering, ancient trees.

Boycott Victoria Businesses that Oppose Bike Lanes!
In Victoria on Vancouver Island, design of its first protected two-way bike lane is taking shape. The design calls for the loss of 32 parking spots. In reaction, local merchants have submitted a petition opposing any protected bike lanes that compromise parking. I am sick of selfish interests compromising cyclist safety – BOYCOTT these businesses!
Cyclists are Inconvenienced by Motorists ALL the Time …
Critical Mass cyclists inconvenience drivers by blocking traffic during rush hour. But while Critical Mass cyclists inconvenience drivers once a month for an hour, motorists inconvenience cyclists every single minute, hour and day of the month.
Sydney Cycling – Seriously Scary!
I was shocked and saddened to see the awful cycling conditions that cyclists endure in downtown Sydney. Cycle lanes end in the middle of nowhere; and there is hardly any safe, separate infrastructure. Cyclists are few and far between – and what few here are, often scoot up onto the sidewalks (presumably so that they can survive a little longer).
Cyclists on the Lachine Canal Bike Path
People of all ages enjoy cycling in safety on the Lachine Canal Bike Path. Situated in Montreal, it’s a truly great off-road bike trail. Here are photos of some of the many people who enjoy cycling along this bike trail in Montreal.

Why Joe and I are Voting Yes on the BC Transit Referendum
We are voting Yes for in the BC Transit Referendum for transit expansion because it is the right thing to do: for ourselves, for our children, for our grandchildren, for our city, and for our planet. For a relatively small annual cost to each household, we can expand transit and ensure that Vancouver continues to be a liveable region for years to come.
Business Man Changes his Mind about Separate Bike Lanes!
Business people around the world have tended to oppose separate bike lanes. But here’s a turnaround from a Vancouver businessman that many readers will find very encouraging!
3 Reasons Why We Need Separated Bike Lanes
We must DEMAND safe cycling infrastructure. We need separated bike lanes because cars are much BIGGER than bikes, and human beings are NOT perfect. Motorists make mistakes; cyclists make mistakes. Our mistakes should not have to be fatal. That’s the most important reason why we need safe, separated bike lanes that keep all cyclists of All Abilities and Ages (AAA) safe at all times. And there are two other good reasons why we need safe cycling infrastructure, which I write about in this post. And it’s not just me – all research shows that when you don’t have safe bikeways, most people don’t ride bikes. But as soon as you put in safe bikeways (read: physically separated bikeways), huge numbers of people start riding bikes.
Safe Cycling in London
A while ago I wrote about the proposed new East-West and North-South Cycle Superhighways in London. The need for the cycle superhighways was highlighted again when a woman cyclist was “crushed” under a lorry at the busy Elephant and Castle circle. I hope that those new East-West and North-South Cycle Superhighways in London get built very soon, so we can stop reading about these awful accidents. We need to have safe cycling in London, just as we need to have safe cycling in all cities.
I found MORE car parking on Hornby Street!
Businesses in Vancouver oppose separate bike lanes because they are worried about parking for their customers – but in fact, there is plenty of parking in Vancouver!
Vancouver Bike Routes – No Lack of Parking on Hornby Street – So Why are Businesses Complaining?
Vancouver bike routes are being developed and made safer by Mayor Gregor Robertson and his Vision Vancouver team. Businesses complain that they have lost parking – but this is a lie. There is a SURPLUS of parking in downtown Vancouver.
Protected Bike Lanes Benefits
Protected bike lanes offer safety benefits to cyclists, pedestrians and motorists; health benefits to everyone; and promote business.

“Bike Lanes a Disaster!” Who the Heck got to Global?
When I first immigrated to Canada I was blown away by many things – not least of which was its free press. I had spent more than three decades living under a regime that tolerated no press freedom whatsoever, so I was extremely impressed by what seemed to be an unfettered press. After watching Global […]
A Little Perspective on Costs: Knight Street Left Turns and the Hornby Bike Lane
Apparently, if money is spent on roads, no one gives a damn – but if money is spent on a bike lane, then it could suddenly become the most personal and important $3,2 million ever spent in the history of Vancouver. Am I the only one who finds this odd?
