Best Bluetooth Headphones under $100 – JayBird Bluebuds Review

AvatarJayBird BlueBuds X Bluetooth Headphones are widely regarded as the highest quality BlueTooth headphones you can get. And now that Jaybird has launched their “upgraded” X2 AND X3 (which are both pretty much the same as the Jaybird X), you can get yourself a pair of Jaybird headphones at an incredibly low price – it seems they are selling off the old stock. This is great for consumers, because you can now get a pair of Jaybird X headphones for about a third of the price they used to cost. If you want nothing but the best headphones for an amazing price, then these might be the right headphones for you.

Here is a video about how great these JayBird BlueBuds X headphones are:

Things I Like about the JayBird BlueBuds X Bluetooth Headphones

Packaging: the packaging feels very premium, with a nice little hard shell case to keep all the pieces in.

Size: The manufacturers claim they are the world’s smallest headphones. They are very tiny, yet deliver amazing sound.

Guarantee: The JayBird BlueBuds X Bluetooth Headphones also offer a lifetime sweat guarantee. However, bear in mind that the batteries only last two to three years, and cannot be replaced. So that’s a pretty short “lifetime” guarantee. It should technically be called “Hamster-lifetime guarantee.”

Fit: Jaybird claims to have a patented secure fit. I do find that they stay in my ears very well, but not perfectly. However, they are one of the highest rated headphones in the world for secure fit.

The sound: Bluebird says on their web site about JayBird BlueBuds X Bluetooth Headphones:

“Through perfecting a custom implementation of the native Bluetooth SBC codec, which we call Shift™, we deliver a level of purity and sound that rivals and challenges the very best in wired headphones.”

Their website also tells us this interesting fact:

“Don’t listen to flat music. Surprisingly, that’s what iPhone, iPod and iPad deliver by default. The new operating system from Apple has new Equalizer settings which deliver a greater music experience. Go to Settings > Music > EQ and tune your sound just the way you want it.”

The sound quality with these tiny Bluetooth headphones is better than any corded earphones or headphones I have used in the less than $200 category.

Buy it now! Find the best price for JayBird BlueBuds

Phone calls: Occasionally I do actually use my phone for phone calls! With these earphones I can take calls by touching the center button, and when the other person hangs up, my music comes back on automatically. Magic! I really, really love this feature, and it’s a great safety feature when walking, running or cycling.

One-hand near-the-ear controls: I can adjust sound with my fingertips on the controls on the headphones, so I don’t have to get my phone out of my pocket. I can also backup one track or go forward one track. Another great safety feature if you are active while using these headphones.

Who Should Buy JayBird BlueBuds X Bluetooth Headphones?

A lot of cyclists use Jaybird headphones, even though immersive headphones would not be my personal first choice for cycling. Jaybird Bluebuds review
A lot of cyclists use Jaybird Bluebuds headphones, even though immersive headphones would not be my personal first choice for cycling

JayBird BlueBuds X Bluetooth Headphones are ideal for active people – so if you workout in a gym, run, walk a lot, or ride a bike, these could be the perfect earphones for you. The lack of wires and secure fit mean it is easy to be active while wearing them. And the great sound quality will motivate you to keep moving!

However, if you want to prioritize safety by actually hearing what is going on around you, these are probably not the best choice. See my post on How to Choose the Safest Headphones for Cycling.

What I don’t like about the JayBird Bluebuds Headphones

Jaybird BlueBuds Review
JayBird BlueBuds X Bluetooth Headphones come with little gadgets called ear cushions that are supposed to stop the headphones from falling out of your ears

Ear cushions: JayBird BlueBuds X Bluetooth Headphones come with these odd little gadgets they call ear cushions. They are supposed to hang onto your ear and prevent the headphones falling out of your ears. I found they did not help me at all. Worse, I had been wearing them for days before I glanced in a mirror and saw that the gadgets were sticking out vertically from my ears, making me look like a giant demented bat. I threw them in the garbage immediately. I had been under the impression that I looked like the guy below who is wearing Jaybirds JF3 with ear tips – but sadly, not so much. Maybe it’s just because I have giant ears and do not look anything remotely like a model …

Jaybird BlueBuds Review
Some people look really good in JayBirds – even with the ear cushions in. Sadly, I just look like a demented bat if I try to use the ear cushions
Jaybird BlueBuds Review
USB charger for the JayBird headphones

Products on the Website: When you have to buy replacement accessories for your JayBird, you will discover that although JayBird is very smart about product technology, they are not very smart about accessories. When you get your JayBird headphones, they come with three sets of ear tips – small, medium and large. (The ear tips are the little foam bits that fit into your ears.) It’s OK to get three sizes with the original kit, because you get a chance to figure out which size fits you best. But when you want to reorder – you have to order another set of small, medium and large! I find that really stupid. Basically you have to buy two sets that you don’t need, in order to get the one set that you do need. WHY can’t I just buy the ones I want (medium)?

Durability of the JayBird Bluebuds X Premium Bluetooth Headphones

These Bluetooth headphones seem to be quite delicate. I recommend not wearing them while sleeping, and NEVER taking them near water. If you sweat heavily, be careful! Treat them with gentle, loving care.

Bottom Line on the JayBird Bluebuds X Bluetooth Headphones

These Bluetooth headphones will give you great cords-free listening with excellent sound. They are quite robust, will go for eight hours on one charge, and take only an hour to recharge from completely flat. If you wake up and they are completely flat because you have had them on all night, you can partially charge them while you are getting dressed and brushing your teeth – and they will still last you for an hour and a half on your way to work. So despite the fairly high price tag, I would say JayBird X headphones are good value for money.

If you are one of those people who will settle for nothing but the best for your Bluetooth listening experience, then you can’t really go wrong buying these Jaybird X Premium Bluetooth headphones at the currently low price. You could also pay a lot more for Bluebuds X2 or X3, but there is really not much difference. I actually wrote an entire post about this version hype here: the New Jaybird X2 vs Jaybird X Headphones.

Jaybird BlueBuds X headphones are also perfect for cycling (if you don’t mind compromising your ability to hear ambient sound – if you do, check out this open-ear option for headphones)!
