Phil Jones used to be a morbidly obese man. His doctor told him he had fatty liver disease and had only a short time to live. Watching the 2012 Summer Olympics in London on TV, he found himself sobbing as he thought this would be his last Olympics. But he was also deeply moved by watching Sir Chris Hoy, Olympic track cyclist, carrying out the British flag as ambassador for the British team. This inspired him to start an incredible journey of cycling weight loss.
Phil says: Something changed in my head that day, and I thought, “Get your bike out, get your bike out!”
When Phil started cycling he could not even wear appropriate clothes, because he was too fat. His knees were bashing his stomach and his heart was pounding, but he says he felt good! He thought, “I can do this, I can actually ride a bike!” That first day, he made it around the block once. But of course, he kept going, and the rest is a wonderful history of cycling weight loss.
Phil credits cycling as the catalyst that helped him lose more than 10 stone (140 pounds) since June 2012. At his top weight of 24 stone (336 pounds), Phil was a dying man who worked as a taxi driver. Now he weighs in at a fit 13 stones (182 pounds), and works as a cycling outreach officer. His story is one of the great stories of cycling weight loss.
