Participation Doubled at Second-Annual Bike to Shop Days in Vancouver
Local Businesses see Value in Attracting People on Bikes
In Vancouver, BC, live music, free tune-ups, guided rides and many prizes were some of the highlights at the Bike to Shop Days (July 21 to 23).

1,740 people registered online and more than 2,500 attended the outdoor events, joined a guided ride, or simply shopped by bike at local businesses to show their support.
Tracy Wilkins, HUB Cycling’s Special Events Manager says:
“Those who bike often have more disposable income to spend at local restaurants and shops because they don’t have to spend their money on car payments, insurance, parking and gas. People who use bikes for transportation also tend to shop more locally. As online shopping becomes increasingly popular, it is so important to support our favourite local businesses in order to keep our communities vibrant.”
Many Business Improvement Associations have begun to recognize the benefits of attracting customers who bike, walk, or take transit to their shops. 100 local businesses offered discounts to their pedaling customers throughout the weekend.
Seven Business Improvement Associations, three shopping malls and several municipalities were among the Bike to Shop Days sponsors.
Laura Jane, Acting Executive Director at HUB Cycling, explains:
“Cycling for transportation is growing. Most of our errands can be done easily – and often faster – by bicycle. However, in order to ensure that people feel safe and comfortable riding their bikes to shop it’s extremely important that municipalities across Metro Vancouver build protected bike infrastructure on shopping streets.”
